Not to be confused with Bishop Rock and it's famous lighthouse, situated 4 miles to the west of the Isles of Scilly, Bishop’s Rock, Newquay is a jagged slate and sandstone stack on Great Western Beach. Park has captured the Devonian-period outcrop looking towards the Atlantic Hotel on the north-west headland of the Beacon; also the site of Newquay’s iconic Huer’s Hut. The Atlantic Hotel was built in 1892, within 10 acres of Newquay’s western cliff tops and from the outset boasted ocean views from every window.
The deft and bold brushstrokes of Bishops Rock, Newquay is yet another demonstration of why John Anthony Park was recognised by the St Ives Modernists as one of the most advanced of the St Ives Impressionists, and has been in recent times exhibited alongside the Modernists in the Tate St Ives.
